Join ReGenerate Illinois and our partner organizations for the ReGenerate Illinois Summit: Small Grains + Agroforestry + Markets on Thursday, March 14, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Epiphany Farms Restaurant in Bloomington, Illinois. Farmers in the Middle Mackinaw Watershed and the IDEA Farm Network are encouraged to come together with value supply chain representatives and invest in a day of conversations and collaboration that look to the future of Illinois sustainable food resources. Low commodity prices are driving many farmers to look for out-of-the-box solutions and crops like oats, wheat, rye, peas, and dry beans can be an excellent addition to an existing production system.

U of I Extension Webinar: Think Global, Eat Local

According to the most recent statistics available from Feeding America, about 15 percent of Illinoisans live with food insecurity, struggling sometime during the year to get the food they need. Children in Illinois are even worse off, with one in five not having enough to eat.  University of Illinois Extension's Local Government Education webinar, Think Global, Eat Local, will highlight Illinois Extension programming designed to assist community leaders and others in addressing the need for additional food access in their communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how communities can partner with Illinois Extension to improve the lives of their citizens through local food projects, including community gardens, mobile markets, food banks and more. The presenters will discuss: food insecurity; planning a community food project; sustainability through fundraising; as well as how to promote volunteer and youth involvement. Participants will also learn about ways to provide your community with healthier food options and a higher quality of life while encouraging community engagement and environmental sustainability.

Join the Savanna Institute for the Agroforestry for Landowners Field Day 2018!

This field day will give landowners a chance to visit two working agroforestry farms in East-Central Illinois. Saturn and Vulcan Farms are experimenting with perennial fruit and nut alternatives to annual crops such as soybeans and corn. Come see these crops first hand and learn how these fruits and nuts could support alternative local and regional markets with a smaller environmental footprint. There will also be ample time for asking questions and meeting other landowners who are interested in agroforestry.
